A new sushi restaurant is getting close to opening in South Miami – and it’s the realization of a long held dream for the owner.
Kinsu Nikkei Sushi is opening at 7209 Southwest 59th Avenue. That’s the former site of the Sano Fresh health food eatery.
Kinsu will feature handcrafted sushi rolls prepared under the guidance of Chef Martin Monteverde, the owner and operator of the new restaurant.
Monteverde has been involved in the local restaurant scene for nearly two decades and – interestingly – once operated a different restaurant in the exact same spot where he’s now opening Kinsu.
Back around 2011, he had a place called Mixt there– a Peruvian-Japanese establishment that leaned heavily into Peruvian cuisine.
This time, he’s flipped the concept around and the new restaurant will be 100 percent Japanese – something he has been wanting to do for most of his career.
“I never wanted to quit until I made it happen,” Monteverde told us. “After 18 years, it’s finally happening.”
The interior of the space is nearly built out and he’s hoping to be ready to open in the next few weeks. We’ll keep in touch with him and keep you posted on Kinsu’s opening date.
